Heard @ Oracle OpenWorld: Fluid Adoptions are in Full Swing

Oracle OpenWorld just wrapped up last week, and there’s nothing quite like joining the 50,000+ people that descend on San Francisco – it’s technology, innovation, and software solutions on the largest of scales.  Having been a part of PeopleSoft for more than 18 years now, it’s incredibly rewarding to have the chance to talk with customers and hear what’s working, where they are facing challenges, and put our heads together to solve real business problems.

This year, the key topics of discussion were the Fluid User Interface, Selective Adoption, and Cloud.  I’ll share a few thoughts on each in turn, focusing on the Fluid UI in this case.

In Paco Aubrejuan’s General Session on PeopleSoft, he reiterated that the Fluid UI is here to stay, and that every customer should be moving to Fluid.  Why?  Because while PeopleSoft has deep and broad functional capabilities, it must also be modern, mobile, and highly intuitive to use.  Our expectations as users of software applications, and the market in general, have evolved to the point that it’s become an imperative.

To be clear, when we say that all customers should ‘move to Fluid’, what we mean is to, at a minimum, adopt the Fluid navigation paradigm – including Home Pages, Tiles, Navigation Collections, the NavBar, and more.  With PeopleTools 8.55, the core navigational elements are the same, regardless of whether you are using a Fluid or Classic component.  Capabilities such as Navigation Collections, which group any logical set of components – both Fluid and Classic – allow administrative and power users to move quickly between common pages (even more easily than the Classic menu and using breadcrumbs).  Classic pages can also be accessed directly from a Tile on a Fluid Home Page, or saved as Favorites in the NavBar.  Pair that with the power of Related Content, Simplified Analytics, and the responsive capabilities that allow you to access any Fluid component from any device, and you can achieve a level of productivity and value that is simply not possible by sticking with what’s most familiar.

It’s one thing for us to be encouraging all customers to move to Fluid, but it’s another to hear from customers that have done it.  This year at OpenWorld we had 16 customers helping us deliver more than 20 sessions and panel discussions, sharing many real-world experiences. Customers flew in from all regions of the globe, representing a wide array of industries, and varied in size from small (4,000 users) to huge (100,000+ users).  To see a summary of what was covered, review the OOW Focus on Document.

Many talked about taking a phased approach to rolling out Fluid – starting with one department, or one functional area, or conducting a pilot.  A common goal was to generally avoid end user training – the software needed to be intuitive enough on its own.   Several used the functionality in PeopleTools to convert Classic pages to Fluid (beyond what’s been delivered to date), and reported it to be pretty straight-forward.  Some used the Fluid Branding tools to employ their own look and feel, others used what came ‘out of the box’.  Some embarked on their Fluid rollouts on their own, while others had strong and collaborative partners engaged.  One customer reported that they’ve found Fluid transactions to generally be about 40% faster, because there are fewer clicks and the experience is more streamlined. Some were motivated to deploy Fluid because of its mobile capabilities, but for many, it was the ease of use, improved productivity, and reduced training burden.  

Universally, their top level message was ‘Do It!’.  Some of my favorite quotes from the sessions:

“I’ve saved so much time as a manager”

 “Each Update Image is like a birthday present, because they keep delivering what we need and are wanting to adopt.”

“We had no choice but to implement Fluid once we showed it to our users, because they loved it.”
