What a week! Another Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco comes to an end and now it’s time to take a look back and recap the event from a PeopleSoft perspective. In talking to dozens of customers, a multitude of PeopleSoft partners, and the small army of Oracle PeopleSoft resources supporting the event, the overall consensus for PeopleSoft at Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco 2015 is extremely positive!
This positive experience starts with the incredibly strong adoption of the latest PeopleSoft solution. The current PeopleSoft offering (Release 9.2) was delivered in March of 2013. In session after session when the audience was asked for a show of hands if they were live or planning to implement the latest PeopleSoft release, one would see a sea of hands in the air. This validates Oracle’s measurement of PeopleSoft adoption which shows nearly 50% of the active install base is on or going to the latest PeopleSoft release.
This large population of customers on the latest PeopleSoft release is reaping the benefits of PeopleSoft Selective Adoption. PeopleSoft Selective Adoption was a major topic at Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco 2015. Customers including Susan G. Komen (supported by MIPRO), Hays (supported by Cedar Consulting UK), and NYU Langone Medical Center (supported by Deloitte) shared their successes and lessons learned while embracing PeopleSoft Selective Adoption. Oracle also shared how customers can develop an effective PeopleSoft Selective Adoption strategy by discussing various maintenance and update strategies that are documented on the PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) home page found on My Oracle Support [login required].
The PeopleSoft user experience enabled by PeopleSoft Fluid User Interface (Fluid UI) also generated lots of excitement last week at the event. Many customers have already embarked on projects to leverage PeopleSoft Fluid UI on mobile devices and workstations (desktops/laptops). University of California at Berkeley, Baylor Scott and White Health, Griffith University, Clackamas County, and others talked about how they started their PeopleSoft Fluid UI projects, the skill sets they needed, change management considerations, their target users, and the value of the simple and intuitive PeopleSoft user experience PeopleSoft Fluid UI delivers.
What’s driving this excitement in PeopleSoft seen at Oracle OpenWorld and across the immense PeopleSoft install base? The simple answer is the ongoing investment and innovation Oracle is making in PeopleSoft. Oracle’s PeopleSoft team laid out a series of objectives that define its ongoing investment strategy. Those objectives are:
1. Provide a modern and intuitive mobile and desktop user experience for all users.
Oracle plans on expanding on the already significant investment in user experience to make PeopleSoft Fluid UI the overall application navigation and user engagement framework. A “Mobile First” design and development approach has produced: Master-Detail 2 Panel Layouts; PeopleSoft Fluid UI Activity Guides and WorkCenters; and Resizable, Interactive, and Push-Based Titles. The end result is an expansion of the simple and intuitive user experience beyond casual users to include “expert” users.
2. Enable personalization and configuration so users can have the information they want, how and where they want it.
By facilitating deeper levels of application personalization and significantly greater application configuration, customers are able to avoid costly customizations needed to make PeopleSoft look and act the way they want it to. Related Content presents information when and where it is contextually relevant. Simplified Analytics enables end users to easily create and publish their own contextually relevant analytics. Page Composer, My Preferences, and the PeopleSoft Fluid UI version of Forms and Approvals Builder allow customers to “make PeopleSoft their own” without the need of IT or customization.
3. Deliver new application functionality and expand the capabilities of existing features.
A great user experience and a deep level of personalization and configuration are critically important, but customers still want and indeed demand more feature/functionality. Oracle delivers on this by focusing on:
- Simplifying business process execution
- Increasing productivity for expert users
- Delivering key industry specific capabilities
- Prioritizing enhancements based on customer feedback
- Ensuring legal and regulatory compliance
4. Allow customers to run, maintain, and update PeopleSoft at a lower cost.
This starts with continuing to deliver multiple updates per year and allowing customers to select the updates they want, when wanted, without requiring upgrades (PeopleSoft Selective Adoption). With that come enhancements to PeopleSoft Lifecycle Management tools like PeopleSoft Update Manager and PeopleSoft Test Framework. By far the most exciting new endeavor for PeopleSoft and the most newsworthy from Oracle OpenWorld was how PeopleSoft plans on taking advantage of the cloud and automation to lower costs.
At Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco 2015 Oracle’s PeopleSoft team began discussing how to leverage the cloud to deploy and manage PeopleSoft applications. Specifically, how to leverage cloud computing such as Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) along with process automation to drive down costs as well as increase agility and time-to-value. The key is automating the manual, labor intensive, and prone to human error IT processes associated with managing PeopleSoft environments. That’s the focus of the PeopleSoft Cloud Architecture. Beginning with PeopleTools 8.55, the PeopleSoft Cloud Architecture can enable:
- Fully Virtualized Infrastructure and Platform
- Automated Configuration of PeopleSoft Instances
- Automated Change Management
- Automated Testing of PeopleSoft Instances
- Automated Provisioning of PeopleSoft Instances
- Automated Cloning of PeopleSoft Instances
- Management of Application Clusters
It is important to note what the PeopleSoft Cloud Architecture does NOT do. It does NOT make PeopleSoft a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application nor does it change the licensing and support model for PeopleSoft.
Oracle is a major provider of cloud solutions. Oracle not only provides Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, but also Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) like that found in Oracle Public Cloud. It is there, in the Oracle Public Cloud, where the PeopleSoft Cloud Architecture connects PeopleSoft deeper into Oracle’s overall cloud strategy.
