Reconnect & Reflect

Last week nearly 500 PeopleSoft customers and partners attended Reconnect 2016 at the Hyatt Regency just outside Chicago.  It was great for our HCM Product team to spend quality time with those in attendance to talk about all things PeopleSoft and HR.  Reconnect is the final user group sponsored conference of the year and serves up the opportunity to reflect on this year's entire conference season which started back in March.  After talking to hundreds of PeopleSoft customers over the past 4 months -- including at Reconnect -- a few high level trends have surfaced that I wanted to share with you.

First, the lion share of PeopleSoft customers we talk to are now starting to get serious about establishing a plan for their Selective Adoption strategy.  They are looking at how to best leverage the PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) tool and other PeopleSoft delivered Lifecycle Management tools to A) smartly take on new features that will help the functional team, and B) stay current with their deployed applications and PeopleTools releases.  In order to mitigate risk and maximize the benefits of the PeopleSoft continuous delivery model, customers are starting to figure out that their best strategy is to align new feature uptake with our image releases.  As a result, there has been a renewed interest in what we plan to deliver in the near future so customers may determine for themselves what they will selectively adopt through PUM versus build themselves through justifiable extensions.

Second, there are more customers on the same release of PeopleSoft applications and PeopleTools than ever before.  We have done surveys at every conference this year, and the results have been amazingly consistent.  Nearly all customers in attendance are on 9.2 and either PeopleTools 8.54 or 8.55.  This point can not be emphasized enough.  The usual chasm between the release from which our Development organization is working and the release our customers have deployed has been significantly reduced.  Now conversations with customers about priorities, strategic investments, and enhancement / bug requests are much easier to have and resolve.  Your needs can be addressed in months, instead of years under the old delivery model.

Third, the momentum around Fluid deployment is at an all time high.  Last year at Reconnect, there was little interest in understanding Fluid and the value of deploying it because customers were more focused on upgrading to 9.2 and understanding the future direction of PeopleSoft.  This year, each Fluid session I have been involved in has been filled with customers keenly ready to deploy Fluid and asking questions about how to deploy it.  Most customers that have deployed Fluid already have done so incrementally and have gotten great feedback from their users.  Our Development teams continue to deliver new Fluid capabilities with each major PUM image.  At Reconnect, we encouraged customers to deploy Fluid even if the entire set of components for a given transaction is not available in Fluid just yet.  These days users are savvy and understand that some capabilities are designed for smartphone usage and others are just web pages.  Your users are more focused on the bigger picture which is getting through an HCM transaction by using their smartphone at anytime, from anywhere.
